How to Draw a Tomato Let’s Get Started!

Step 1

Let’s start this focus on how to draw a tomato with the stalk and leaves of the fruit. You can draw the stem using some curved lines close to each other. Then add a small circle at the top of these lines and finish the stem with a curved line at the base. Next, we can draw the distinctive little leaves found at the base of a tomato stem. You can draw these leaves with more curved lines that end in small sharp points.

As shown in our contact image, we resolve to add five of these leaves to the tomato. Once the stem and leaves are drawn, you can use larger rounded lines for the left edge of the tomato. We won’t draw the right side for now, but we’ll work on that in the next few steps, so let’s move on when you’re done!

Step 2

As promised, we’ll start adding the right side of the tomato drawing in this step. To do this, draw another curved line from the leaves at the top. This side of the tomato will only go some way down, as we will soon be drawing a tomato segment in that space. You can also add some lining detail near the bottom edge of the tomato to give it more texture and shine. Then go to step 3!

Step 3

Now that you’ve finished drawing the whole tomato, we can start drawing the sliced tomato segment next to it in this step of our how to draw a tomato guide. This segment will have a rounded base and sides, but the top will be a straight line to make this segment look more like a wedge.

For now, we won’t end the line on the upper left side of the segment, as we’ll add details there later. There will also be a line on the inside that curls up at the end, and you’ll see why we drew it that way when we add details later. See.

Step 4

We’ll continue your tomato drawing by adding a few more to the slice segment. You can start by drawing a wavy line for the sharp top edge of the segment. We will then draw some smaller details around this line.

Draw a series of thin, curved horseshoe-shaped lines inside the segment, as shown in the reference image. You can then finish this step by adding some smaller details within the outline before finishing the final touches in the next step.

Step 5

Tomatoes have lots of little seeds inside, and to draw these seeds for the segment, we’ll use a creative trick. That line inside the segment you curved at the end of the guide will come in handy here. For that curly end of the line, we’ll draw a new line that has little skinny loops along it. The reference image will show you how they should look. Each loop represents a seed for the segment, and we’ll emphasize this more when we add color to the image.

Once you’ve added these seeds, you’re ready to move. A! However, be sure to add any additional details you’d like first. You could draw a scene showing what other fruits or vegetables you want with this tomato. How do you plan to finish this image?

Step 6

You have now reached the final step of your tomato drawing. In our example image, we used various shades of red and pink for the exterior and interior of the tomato. By varying the shades, you can create texture and shine for the surface. We then used a bit of green for the stem and leaves and finished using yellow for the small seeds. We chose these colors, and you can modify them however you like by adding some shades of green! What colors and artistic mediums would suit this image best?
